Thank you Drake for adding a new word to my repertoire.Girls, cars and jewelry are well-documented tropes of hip-hop, but anyone who listens to enough rap knows that eating is one of the genre's most pervasive obsessions. Despite it’s context, your woe = your crew, clique, squad, and yourself should always be “working on excellence”. With so many things going on in our daily life, we have to slow down and take a step back and think when having conversations with certain people because they might not know what we’re actually saying to them, just like the situation with my friend Dominic. Some words in our language hold double meanings and it can be confusing to anyone hearing them. Google has made searching for words, topics, or just anything in general more accessible for anyone. In this day an age, where smartphones are literally owned by everyone, you can just jump online and google what you need to find out. I realized that if you didn’t listen to specific music or keep up with slang, you’d be excluded from a lot of conversations due to you not knowing specific word meanings or how they would be used in context. After explaining what woe meant to him, Dominic said, “you crazy kids, with your play on words, I will never understand.īut my other co-workers that were younger and listened to Drake’s music, knew exactly what I meant when I throw woe into the mix of things. I laughed, because I completely forgot that he didn’t know what it meant. He replied “why are you meeting up with your problems, are you crazy?”.
I recall an instance where I was talking to my co-worker Dominic and said, “I’m meeting up with my woes later after work. Especially if they haven’t listened to any of Drake’s music or brushed up on their slang, they were literally lost in the sauce whenever I would use this word. Since most of my co-workers age range from 30 to 40, when I would throw woe into the conversation they had no clue what I was saying to them. I began incorporating woe into my vernacular as a test. Woe is used to describe you personally, your friends, squad, clique, or your crew (these are all terms that can be substituted for woes) that you roll with on the daily. Here Are All The Answer You Need by Mehak Anwar, states that “But perhaps the lyric that most got picked up by Instagram and Facebook photo captions all over North America was off the song “Know Yourself”: The phrase, “running through the six with my woes”. To be Woe is to strive for greatness in any endeavor you encounter or try to take on. Now after reading this, woe makes sense to me. So, all my friends are my Woes and I feel anybody working on excellence in life is a Woe in life as well”.
It’s just my whole brand and my whole movement and my way of life for everyone. In an interview Drake gave to Vice Music Magazine, Noisey, Drake describes what woe means “Woe is my crew. Here’s a link to Drake’s song “Know Yourself”, so that you could listen to it.
I Google’d it and I also didn’t want to appear stupid or not be up to par on my slang with my friends or anyone I came in contact with, just in case this word found its way into the conversation. So I did what anybody else does when they want to find out about something. This word had to have a different meaning to it. Drake doesn’t spit any issues he has personally in his song. As the song progressed, I carefully listened to it. Woe by definition means great sorrow or distress. I thought to myself, “Drake, has issues like any of us”. Woes…….What does that mean? When I first heard this word being dropped in a verse by Drake, “running through the 6 with my woes” in his song “Know Yourself” released in 2015, I was puzzled.
